Role of Nurses in Policy Advocacy Essay Assignment Discussion Paper
Response 2
Thank you, Robin, for your input on the subject matter. I agree that nurses can play a fundamental role in policy advocacy. This is because they are more involved with patients and better understand patient needs and clinical workflows. I support nurses in policy advocacy by playing the role of policy advisor and joining nursing organizations. In addition, nurses can engage in policy advocacy through collaboration with lawmakers who influence health care bills and participate in legislative committees. Through the alliances, nurses can provide lawmakers with evidence-based data that will guide decisions made in the policy-making process (Turale & Kunaviktikul (2019). Nurses can also engage in policy advocacy by running for legislative positions. The nurse can play an important role in influencing decisions affecting patient care and the healthcare system by being elected into office. However, while nurses must involved in policy making and advocacy, their participation is low. According to Jurns (2019), inadequate political knowledge is one challenge that hinders their participation and limits their ability to run for legislative positions. Therefore, nurses must improve their knowledge and skills in policy-making and advocacy. This can be achieved by enrolling in training programs that equip them with knowledge of policy-making and advocacy. Secondly, nurses can participate in legislative sessions to gain first-hand experience on developing, implementing, and evaluating policies. By improving their political knowledge and skills, the nurse becomes more empowered to engage in policy advocacy that ultimately impacts patient care. THE ROLE OF THE RN/APRN IN POLICY-MAKING
Word cloud generators have become popular tools for meetings and team-building events. Groups or teams are asked to use these applications to input words they feel best describe their team or their role. A “word cloud†is generated by the application that makes prominent the most-used terms, offering an image of the common thinking among participants of that role. Role of Nurses in Policy Advocacy Essay Assignment Discussion Paper
What types of words would you use to build a nursing word cloud? Empathetic, organized, hard-working, or advocate would all certainly apply. Would you add policy-maker to your list? Do you think it would be a very prominent component of the word cloud?
Nursing has become one of the largest professions in the world, and as such, nurses have the potential to influence policy and politics on a global scale. When nurses influence the politics that improve the delivery of healthcare, they are ultimately advocating for their patients. Hence, policy-making has become an increasingly popular term among nurses as they recognize a moral and professional obligation to be engaged in healthcare legislation.
