Goal:

The purpose of this assignment is to identify a theory or model which can be used as a framework for a future evidence-based project

Content Requirements:

  1. Review literature regarding issues or concerns within your selected area of advanced practice nursing.
  2. Select a theory or model which is relevant to your selected area of advanced practice nursing.
  3. Offer a meaningful context for evidence-based practice surrounding the issue or concern which you identified.
  4. Identify and describe a theory or model, and explain its relevance to the issues or concerns within your selected area of advanced practice
  5. Explain how the theory or model can be used as a framework to guide evidence-based practice to address the issue or concern, and discuss the unique insight or perspective offered through the application of this theory or model.

Submission Instructions:

  • The PowerPoint presentation is original work and logically organized. It should consist of 10-15 slides excluding the title and reference.
  • The PowerPoint presentation should be clear and easy to read. Speaker notes expanded upon and clarified content on the slides.
  • The PowerPoint presentation should be formatted per APA guidelines and references should be current (published within the last five years) scholarly journal articles or primary legal sources (statutes, court opinions)
  • Incorporate a minimum of 4 current (published within last five years) scholarly journal articles or primary legal sources (statutes, court opinions) within your work. Journal articles and books should be referenced according to current APA guidelines (the library has a copy of the 7th Edition APA Manual).

For this assignment, I would select the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as a framework for a future evidence-based project in the field of nursing education. The TPB is a well-established theory in the realm of psychology and social sciences and has been widely applied to understand and predict health-related behaviors.

Context:

In nursing education, one prevalent issue is the challenge of promoting active student engagement in the learning process. Traditional didactic teaching methods may not always effectively engage students or promote long-term retention of knowledge. This lack of engagement can hinder the development of critical thinking skills and clinical reasoning abilities, ultimately impacting the quality of nursing education and the preparedness of future nurses.

Theory or Model:

The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) is highly relevant to this issue. Developed by Icek Ajzen in 1985, TPB posits that human behavior is determined by three main factors: attitudes toward the behavior, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. According to TPB, individuals are more likely to engage in a behavior if they have positive attitudes toward it, perceive social pressure to perform the behavior (subjective norms), and believe they have the ability to perform the behavior (perceived behavioral control).

Relevance:

In nursing education, the TPB can help educators understand students’ attitudes toward active learning methods, their perceptions of social norms within the academic environment, and their beliefs about their own ability to actively engage in the learning process. By identifying these factors, educators can tailor educational interventions to promote active student engagement and enhance learning outcomes.

Framework for Evidence-Based Practice:

Using the TPB as a framework, educators can design evidence-based interventions aimed at promoting active student engagement in nursing education. For example, interventions could include implementing active learning strategies such as case-based learning, problem-based learning, and simulation-based education, which have been shown to improve student engagement and learning outcomes in healthcare education (Gallagher et al., 2018; Lopreiato et al., 2016). Additionally, educators can work to create a supportive learning environment that fosters positive attitudes toward active learning methods and promotes a sense of social belonging among students.

Unique Insight or Perspective:

The TPB offers a unique perspective by emphasizing the importance of understanding individuals’ attitudes, social norms, and perceived control in predicting behavior. By applying this theory to nursing education, educators can gain insights into the factors influencing student engagement and develop targeted interventions to address these factors effectively.
