Length – 1000-1500 words.  Artistic,
creative response in visual or in your own words form may be part of your
Reflection, but you must have the minimum required amount of written text and
address the requirements to get a top grade.
Formatting – Each new entry will start on a new page.  The date of the entry and the Unit number
should be written at the top of the page before you begin your Reflection.
What You Should Address in Your Reflection – the
following questions are meant to guide students in successful response
writing.  They do not have to be answered
in sequence.
Successful Journal Entries will show a student’s individual
reflective engagement in the following way:
1.
Think over the Humanities artifacts introduced in class and choose
2-3 objects that impressed you in some way.
2.
Identify each artifact with the following information:  genre, author/artist, date,
historical and cultural context of creator and of what is described in the
artifact.
3.      Describe your
response to these artifacts.  What
did they make you feel or think?
4.      Explicitly
identify the aspects of style that made you respond the way you did
(color, light, content, mood, imagery, sound, historical context, human
situation portrayed, the ideology presented by the artifact).
5.      Did the
artifact make a positive or negative impression on you?  Was it shocking?  Did it elicit aesthetic pleasure?  Did it exhibit an aesthetic of beauty or an aesthetic
of disruption?
Citation of Sources       You do not need to cite sources for artifacts displayed and discussed
in class and anything communicated in the Lecture Notes posted on
Blackboard.  However, any information
beyond this must be cited using MLA style.
Include a reference to where you found the information in parentheses
after you include it.  If it is a website
include full name of the entry and the address.
Not citing sources constitutes plagiarism and the rules in the syllabus
for plagiarism will apply.
Creative Options – since one response to Humanities artifacts is the creation of
new artifacts, students may choose to respond in some creative way over and
beyond their written Journal entries (the minimum of written response must
still be submitted if students wish to engage in a creative option).
Some ideas for a creative response include – if a student wishes to
do a creative entry that is not included here, please ask: (most of these
suggestions can be used in a power point slide and attached to the journal
entry—as well as the recommended word count)
·
The inclusion of visual images and illustrations, of your own
design or taken from elsewhere that show comparison with or response to the
Humanities artifacts featured in your Journal entry.
·
You may decorate the margins of the journal entry with relevant
designs or commentary.
·
Different colored ink or different fonts may be used to communicate
different types of responses.
·
“Pop-up” or “cut-out” designs may be added on the page.
