Students are required to submit a research essay on a topic relevant to the history of the modern Middle East. Essays shall be typed, double-spaced, and 1500-2000 words (8-10 pages) in length (exclusive of title page, bibliography and footnotes or endnotes.
Students must follow the requirements for format and citation as outlined in
Guidelines for Academic Essays are available on the course website. The “Chicago style” is required for footnotes and endnotes as well as bibliographic citations. Students must use a minimum of five scholarly sources in the writing of their essays. Students should consult the instructor if they have any questions as to the permissibility or scholarly character of the sources they propose to use in the writing of their essays.
