soldiers’ overall well-being and quality of life. According to Schilling et al. (2022), the American Public Health Association (APHA) and the National Center for Healthy Housing (NCHH) posit that housing is a crucial factor since it is part of the social determinant of mental and physical health. Therefore, substandard housing leads to various adverse effects on the family’s economic and social stability, children’s education, and medical and health costs. Some of the adverse effects that NCHH and APHA outline include an increase in asthma cases by 30 percent, lung cancer, neurological damage for children, particularly those living in houses with lead-based paint, and injuries due to low maintenance of substandard houses. Schindler’s (2021) article assesses the issue of poor housing in Fort Hood, which is also referred to as Fort Cavazos. That is in consideration that the region harbors the largest United States military group who lives with their families. From the research done by Schindler (2021), soldiers and their families living at Fort Hood have different views concerning housing, considering that some threaten to sue private housing companies that manage their houses. The statement that supports the need to rethink married soldiers’ health and well-being is stated by Ryan Reed, which supports my thesis. That is because Ryan, the married soldiers’ lawyer, states that these houses have rampant water leaks and the houses have pervasive mold throughout, including insect infestations that affect personal effects and household goods (Schindler, 2021).

Ahmad et al. (2020) article evaluates the issue of poor housing across the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic and how it affected the general population. Some of the factors noted are associated with poor housing, including the high-cost burden of housing, overcrowding, incomplete plumbing facilities, and incomplete kitchen facilities. Considering that these factors exacerbated the COVID-19 mortality and morbidity rates. It means poor housing for married soldiers increases Covid-19-related risks to the population. The article supports the thesis statement since finding a better solution to poor housing can be generalized to the entire population.

Table 1: United States Classification of States with Poor Housing (Bludworth, 2023).
Bludworth (2023) classified Texas as the 6th worst state in relation to poor housing. The researcher indicates that the Texas population with low income has a higher possibility of living in poor houses. That is because the state needs more available and affordable extremely low-income renters rental housing. However, the higher-income households need more homes, thus obscuring the lowest-income households’ shortage. Such knowledge brings forth the question of whether the married soldiers with Fort Cavazos who experience poor housing can be classified in the lowest-income household category. That way, it can be easy to assess if policies to provide these married soldiers with affordable and quality housing development should also assess the salaries of these soldiers to boost their housing experiences. Schneyer, J. (2019, May 22). U.S. military families are far unhappier with housing than landlords claim. Reuters. https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-housing-map/
From Schneyer’s (2019) article, most landlords’ report concerning housing in the United States usually states that their tenants have a higher satisfaction level. However, their reports contradict the tenant’s survey, particularly the military families whose reports are basically negative. The Reuters team identified that most military families live in a slum-like environment. Still, when asked to comment on the issue, the Defense Department failed to comment on such a claim, thus leaving the reader in the dilemma of who should fight for the plight of married soldiers. However, the Defense Department indicated that they were confident that it was necessary to privatize housing even though there was an issue in overseeing the Department of Defense’s implementation of the housing privatization program. Keeping track of the sources you have found to support your argument for change, assessing the credibility of those sources, and determining their value for supporting your argument will help you to write a more effective academic essay. An annotated bibliography allows you to do all of these things; it is essentially a references page with “annotations†for each source that summarize the main idea, assess the sourceâ€s credibility, and note the value of the source for your argument.
For the Unit 6 Assignment, you will prepare an annotated bibliography that includes four sources related to your idea for change. Please include the following:
Title page in APA format
Your revised thesis statement for an argument for change in your community
Citations and annotations for four separate sources, which can be primary or secondary but should all be credible and appropriate for academic research
One source that includes a visual or graphic component to help you prepare for the Unit 9 Assignment (the presentation)
One source that addresses a rival hypothesis or misconception about your topic (NOTE: the source does not have to oppose your thesis; it just needs to help you address a rival perspective)
Citations should be in APA format Texas Affiliation of Affordable Housing Providers Discussion Paper
Annotations should include the following:
1–2 sentence summary of the sourceâ€s main idea, followed by an in-text citation, e.g. (Smith, 2014)
Evaluation of the sourceâ€s credibility, including the authorâ€s credentials and the verifiability of the sourceâ€s information; this should include where you found the source (Library, Google search engine, government website, etc.). Use the criteria covered in Evaluating Information to guide your evaluation.
Discussion about how you will use the source to support your argument for community change (this would include whether it poses a challenge to your argument that you will need to address). In this section, paraphrase a key point from the source that supports or challenges your thesis and include an in-text citation.
NOTE: No separate references page is needed, but each annotation should have a complete reference citation in APA format. Texas Affiliation of Affordable Housing Providers Discussion Paper
